THE RAPALLO CASTLE

Construction of the castle was deliberated in 1550 and realised in 1551 to defend Rapallo from raids by pirates. The very year before (on the 4th of July 1549) the Turk, Dragut, attacked from the sea and sacked the village. During that period Gerolamo Cattaneo was the Podestà of Rapallo; the project and overseeing of works were entrusted to the Comacine master Antonio Carabo.

After being used for varied purposes, from fortress to prison, today after a recent restoration the castle is used for exhibitions.

In this beautiful aerial view where we can see the distribution of the slate roofing, the castle rises from the sea in its role of defending the coast, to which it is linked by the thin isthmus.
